What is quilling?

Quilling or paper filigree is the art of creating and designing decorations from paper. Paper is cut into strips and then rolled, looped, curled, twisted and otherwise manipulated to create shapes which make up designs to decorate greetings cards, pictures, boxes, eggs, etc., as well as to make jewelry, wall decorations, 3D miniatures, and many other decorative objects.

How was quilling created?

Quilling was known all the way back in the 15th century, in Renaissance France and Italy gilded paper was used to create decorations for religious objects as an alternative to expensive gold filigree. In the 18th and 19th century this technique became a popular hobby with women in England, they decorated their teapots, parts of furniture and later quilling expanded throughout the world.

Through all this time quilling remained mostly the same until the 21st century when the amazing 3D miniatures (figures) and museum installations were created thanks to the hard-working creative people. Today quilling is recommended to schools because it affects children’s motor skills and the development of their creative spirit.
